Taking the time to plan out your move will definitely relieve some of the associated stress and help you transition into your new home in a timely manner. We hope you find these moving tips helpful!
If possible it is always a good idea to schedule your movers as far in advance as time will allow. You will most likely need moving boxes so plan ahead and get your boxes ready a few weeks before your big move. We recommend using new boxes because you don’t want your possessions damaged due to the poor integrity of a box that has been through one too many moves. If you have any questions as to where to buy quality boxes and moving supplies please ask us, we are more than happy to help.
However, we understand that moving can be an expensive time so if you would like to save a few bucks on boxes here are some useful tips:
When packing your possessions make sure and tape the bottom of the box with packaging tape.
Place heavier items (such as books) in smaller boxes.
Make sure and wrap fragile items in bubble wrap or newspaper. Used plastic grocery bags and newspaper are also good space fillers in fragile boxes.
When packing your dishes we recommend you buy a pack of disposable plates (thick paper plates or foam plates preferably) and place one or two disposables in between each plate to give them added protection inside the box.
ALWAYS label your boxes. Trust us this will help you out in the long run when you’re trying to unpack. Also, if a box contains fragile items or heavy items it’s a good idea to note that on the box.
If you know what room in your new house you would like your individual boxes to be placed, try color coding your boxes. A good way to color code your boxes is to buy several different colors of duct tape and designate a color for each room then place a strip of tape on each box with the color that corresponds to the destination room.
When possible try and avoid packing boxes to the point where they will no longer close. Also, avoid using boxes that do not have a top. These boxes are very difficult to stack in the truck.
Take the light bulbs out of your lamps.
If you decide to take apart furniture items before your moving day make sure and put the parts somewhere that is readily accessible. (We are more than happy to disassemble and reassemble your furniture for you).
Let your movers know in advance if you have any extremely heavy items (i.e. pianos, safes, exercise equipment, etc.) These items will sometimes require special equipment to move and there may an additional fee.
Remember to get a change of address form from the post office and don’t forget to call and switch/activate your utilities at your new address.
Ask us if you have any questions about your upcoming move, our friendly staff is more than happy to help you with all of your moving needs.
